Many thought it was just a joke, others believed that it wasn’t serious. The truth is, Moggmentum is a political movement to make Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg a cool guy. We shouldn’t underestimate Rees-Mogg.
Yes, that’s right. The Conservatives are fighting back with a campaign for aristocrat Rees-Mogg, to become their leader. And they want to do that by copying what Momentum has managed to do for Jeremy Corbyn, Labour and social media.
Moggmentum wants to create a social movement around their leader, the cult-like Rees-Mogg, so that he can become the next leader of the Conservatives.
Conservative supporters and fans of Ress-Mogg have even launched a petition and set up a fundraising page to help him become the next Prime Minister.
The 48-year-old MP has become a social media star and is described by his fans as the Tory antithesis to Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn.
They believe that he is the person to lead the Conservative fightback and reignite the promise of a Tory Britain. That’s why they’ve launched Moggmentum, a pale copy of Labour party fringe group, Momentum.
Like Momentum, Moggmentum’s goal is to channel the enthusiasm and energy for Rees-Mogg and convert it into a movement capable of sending him to 10 Downing Street. Yes, nothing more than that. But don’t be fooled, Rees-Mogg is nothing other than a Tory and a nasty one.
Rees-Mogg is not amusing. He is a cruel, deplorable and dangerous man. A quick look at his voting record and you will see what Moggmentum don’t want you to know.
Rees-Mogg consistently voted against laws to promote equality and human rights. Gay rights? Well, he voted against equal gay rights too.
The Conservative MP is also a climate change denier and consistently voted against measures to mitigate climate change.
But Moggmentum’s poster boy also voted against paying higher benefits over longer periods for those unable to work due to illness or disability.
And what about the EU referendum? Rees-Mogg is a hard-core Brexiteer who was forced by his own party to accept that EU workers living in the UK will have the right to stay in the country once we leave the EU. However, if he becomes PM, he will certainly make sure that all EU nationals living in the UK lose their rights to stay.
Still not convinced that he is a nasty man? Look at his voting record via They Work For You:
Moggmentum tries hard to portray their guru as a cool and strong leader. Let’s not forget that we are talking about a man who took his nanny canvassing with him in Central Fife, a mostly working-class constituency, in the 1997 General Election.
Obviously, some would argue that Moggmentum isn’t a real thing. It is satire. That’s why we asked them to comment on a previous article, Jacob Rees-Mogg: a posh Mr Bean?
And here is their answer:
Moggmentum is a real political movement, crafted around Rees-Mogg to make him more acceptable. The man who seems closer to a posh version of Mr Bean is a true Tory.
However, and unlike most other Tories, he has mastered the art of social media and developed a decent appearance and presence.
Rees-Mogg is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Do not underestimate him.
